or, well, it released on april 27th, either late at night or early in the morning. i checked my phone one last time before going to bed, saw the email that it had just been released, and i bought it because i knew that if i waited until morning i likely wouldn’t get the chance to.
i still find it so surprising… like i remember buying grave chimera years after it released and there were maybe 5 more unsold cds left,1 but now their stuff sells out within hours. good for them, definitely, but maybe that’s a sign to bump up the print run just a little bit?
i was barely awake (halfawake, you might say) and, after buying so much of their merch and making them meaningful to me, i felt compelled to write a little message of appreciation in the buyer’s notes. i forget exactly what i wrote, except that it was something about how they helped to reflect my pain in a way that helped make sense of it. i remember worrying about the phrasing so that it wouldn’t sound like a backhanded compliment, and even after some rewording i still worried that it could be taken the wrong way, but i figured it was better to say something (even if clumsy) than to say nothing at all.
when they sent out the package, they sent me a very kind note along with it… and, whaddya know, it made my day too.
when i first saw this track listing, i found it kinda weird how most of every album is on here. like, wouldn’t they be able to stretch just a little bit more and fit everything onto the cd? except, if you look through, the only songs that got cut were the ambient interludes. but also, the collection is so complete that it’s tough to say that these retrospections were as selected as the title makes them out to be.
i kinda love how the entirety of phantasmaphilia is on here – if that’s not a tacit confirmation that it’s not receiving a physical release then i’m not sure what is.
the only thing that would’ve made it for me would be if it had dollmaker too, but i think that one’s custody is just a little too strange.2
