mapping out the graph of relationships with corkboard and string:

  • Sonic Coaster Pop released Sonic Coaster Pop – Future Electro Star (2001) on Girly Records
    • Akira Suzuki is the producer and songwriter for Sonic Coaster Pop, and soon afterward he also started the label Usagi-Chang Records
  • cigarett’s lead vocalist was Mika Daito and they released their albums on Girly Records
  • Mika later went solo as Misswonda, contributing Talking of Girl to Usagi-Chang’s first release, Usagi-Chang Records – Usagi-Chang Superstar!! Vol.0001 (2002), which was written with Hidekazu Sakamoto and Tatsuya Sugama
    • (I’m not sure how those last two are connected, except that I believe that they were credited as Automatic Supper on the Usagi-Chang Superstar release of Talking of Girl)
    • She later released Misswonda – Wonderful Tangent (2005) on Usagi-Chang Records, which had a few songs written by Akira, but the rest were written by Hidekazu and/or Tatsuya. Akira recorded and produced this album, though Mika is still listed as the director
  • Once Usagi-Chang Records closed down and Akira transitioned to the label Flawless World, she released this album, apparently working closely with Akira here, with him producing and writing the majority of the songs

disc 1

★ i am a moon
★★ blue blue in the world.
★★ second blooming. god this production is something else though. it sounds icy and blue just like the cover art!
★★ rain drops dances. yeah this is so luscious! and this is also one of the ones that hidekazu sakamoto wrote
★★ tsuki ga michita tokini. i’ll say that, if there’s one thing that aki socopo is good at, it’s creating albums with unified, enveloping atmospheres. hell, he somehow pulled that off on a compilation album! and you really hear it here, moreso than on wonderful tangent, which might also be a result of him having more control over the production
★ kirameki no tsubasa. this album is so sparkly! it’s so kirameki!
★ ningyohime
★ love fish
★★ hanon. it’s a yummy end for a yummy album

and now it’s remix time.

i wonder what akira was like to work with… was he an overbearing producer?

disc 2

★ the blue blue remix. you know, i feel like at times the ptsb style comes off as a kind of youtube pooping of music, with the only thing saving it being the pedigree of the samples.
★ rain drops dances st.classics mix: and that’s right baby, st.classics is none other than our boy akira suzuki. so i guess, even on one of the few tracks on here that he didn’t write, he still wanted to try his hand at making an arrangement anyway? though this is very different from any of the other tracks he’s done here or with socopo, so maybe he used this as an opportunity to try out this downtempo style.
kirameki no tsubasa has a fun groove, though that one chime is weirdly loud and ruins the song for me… and then by the end it just runs over the chord progression?
★ ningyohime

maybe it’s just really hard to find remixes that establish their own identity.
