  • chloe called it “bubblegum star trek” during the first five minutes and i think that’s the most correct description one could give
  • oh those 3d models look so cheap it’s adorable
  • i guess one challenge of setting things in the speculative near-future comes with deciding which technologies will be arriving in the near-future. the film solves this problem by not really giving a shit
    • in the latter half of 20xx, people still drive vw beetles (a timeless enough design, i guess). crts and beige computers are still in widespread use. andrew uses an nec versa!
    • meanwhile, so much of the drama of this plot could’ve been solved had zenon recorded lutz on her phone’s camera: an invention which was scarcely ten years away, and which would become ubiquitous among younger demographics almost immediately
    • i’m just glad that flash animations still have a place in this world
  • zenon is a girl who is never really challenged in a personal sense. she never believes herself to be seriously in the wrong, and we are never made to feel like she is actually in the wrong. everyone else is just unable to see how right she is!
    • her only real struggle is adapting to earth, though it’s strange because once zenon touches down she becomes a total dweeb major. i find her lack of self-awareness in terms of being an outsider hard to believe – it comes off more as how cultists act
    • maybe this says something about how insular space stay culture is, as well as the culture and values held within what is predominantly a research community, but i think we’re not really expected to give a shit
  • anyway how do i become a pop star so i can groom a girl like her

Notes

Received a sequel in Zenon - The Zequel (2001).
