Log

2025-07-15 yearning

oh yume china doll is plodding as hell
★ sou shimashou ne: yeah i mean even the obligatory sixties ballad throwback leaves me slightly cold… but she does has a yummy voice, so is the production just really letting her down here?
★★ actually nvm, when the reverb picks up her voice in the second chorus i feel a bit of that something i was longing for.1

koi resistance: yeah i can hear what they’re going for, but the production just isn’t backing it up…
★★ euromantique: yeah it’s so frustrating because i really love her voice! it has the softness of like tsukasa itoh) – maybe even tomoyo levels of softness – but with a clarity that somehow makes the softness come through stronger and a discipline that allows her to actually hit her notes.
but then she got paired up with composers and arrangers who, despite being industry staples, somehow still let her down. unlike sayonara con-nichiwa, the arrangements aren’t as unhinged; unlike probably a lot of other idol kayo, they don’t play to her strengths either. it’s as if she’s just one entry into the talent pool and she got the tracks that would’ve been assigned to anyone.

i wish i could take her away and write songs for her.
i am discovering new and exciting forms of yearning as we speak.

Footnotes

  1. so it looks like this was written by kazuya amikura2 and arranged by mitsuo hagita (of 萩田光雄 – SECRET LOVE (1976) fame). this is the only track that either of these people worked on here, and maybe that’s why i feel like this one manages to stand out… perhaps.

  2. of “Listen to My Love Songs” (リッスン・トゥー・マイ・ラブ・ソングス) fame. which, with a title like that, it kinda makes me want to track down these love songs now…
