i really should listen to more chimurenga. perhaps because, if i’m interested in something, i should, like, engage with it.
★ moyo wangu
★ varombo kuvarombo, for the silly synths
★★ shabeen is even sillier but shit that chorus.
not too long ago i found a youtube video of a performance of chitima nditakure by mapfumo’s nephew, apparently. and his mannerisms are so strange in that performance. part of it comes off as the hesitant anxiety of someone like gary numan, but also there’s a layer where it really looked like he was under a spell for that song. he was possessed, and not fully in control of himself, looking around frantically, and channeling certain melodic lines between the lyrics.
and then he ran out of lyrics, and he suddenly started smiling and dancing like nothing just happened.
★ muchadura
★ chigwindiri

★★ i keep coming back to varombo kuvarombo and shabeen. they really are something special, even if the organ is kinda silly.
also shit its album art is so good
Notes
I believe this got an international release under the title “Corruption,” with track titles translated into English.
