Leftover songs for an album that never was.

i don’t know why i have the problems i do. i don’t know why i’ve been a little insistent on redownloading my old vaporwave collection in flac while i still can, nor do i know why i’ve been wanting to spend this year going back through my music collection to get plays on what i already have1 instead of digging further. but maybe sometimes this too can become its own entry point, as i would’ve never known that toyotacelica put out another album until i decided to go back and upgrade my mp3s to full-on flacs.

As for why I decided to use the Toyota Celica as a moniker? To be honest, I don’t really even know. From what I have heard, it’s not even that good of a car model. I guess there weren’t really any people using older model vehicles other than the staple 80’s lambos or ferrari’s so I just decided on something that was definitive in the 90’s yet lacked to leave something of an impact on media relating to vehicles.

i think they might be selling the celica a little bit short, though. ’80s and ’90s japanese cars were hot to the same kind of millennial brain that’s also most predisposed to latch onto vaporwave due to misfiring nostalgia circuits. it would’ve been a car that they’ve seen on the streets quite a lot, whereas i’m not sure if i’ve ever seen a testarossa out in the wild.2 it’d be recognized as kind of a sporty car (though still a toyota), and the car fans (including the gran turismo players) would’ve definitely seen pictures of it wearing its castrol livery. so the celica would’ve been a part of everyday life, yet still one with ties to the exceptional.

for vaporwave’s purposes, that’s a really good place to be! so much vaporwave makes its home within the domain of “premium mediocre,” nestled in alongside qvc jewelry, timeshare vacations, those stores at the mall that smell nice when you walk past, etcetera etcetera. it hints at the aspiration but sells you the pragmatic alternative; it leans more business class than private jet. and it’s the genre of going to the toyota dealership because you liked the supra and settling for, well, a celica.

★ kiri no naka no highbeam.

Footnotes

  1. i’m really hoping navidrome can be where i settle down, since i’m so tired of hopping from music player to music player, losing all my play data and having to re-add my track ratings each time…

  2. maybe that’s just a byproduct of where i grew up, though… i remember seeing lotus esprits every so often (i even saw one just the other day! i fangirled so hard!), but a different vaporwave artist already claimed custody of that one
