i started downloading hella gamemp3s again, because i realized i used the ending of this for something but didn’t actually have the soundtrack anymore.
★ kizashi
★★ niji. the interlude hit and i remembered how nice this soundtrack is
in retrospect it even almost has a yuge vibe to it?
★★ ai. i never noticed how unsubstantial that anthem melody is though
and michi is also kinda weird and toaplany.
and then come the image songs
★ crossroad of fate
★ grieving womb
★ the battle was just to continue that future. remember that one psyvariar 2 song that really influenced me?
★★ who decided about dying peacefully
and now a remix of ddp’s weirdass soundtrack.

i miss the hype days of saidaioujou.
i miss the time when all we had was loctest footage shot on camera in a noisy arcade and i thought that the boss music changed with each stage, after the shared opening phrase. i thought that was a really cool touch.
but i dunno why i thought that… this is an IKD-style game, after all, so it was destined to be built to spec, with as few changes to that ancient engine as possible.
but listening to this now, the soundtrack is only reluctantly in stereo. and i know exactly why that is: jamma only outputs mono audio, so the closer to mono you make your mix the better it’ll sound once compressed. but when you’re making the soundtrack mix, you don’t have these restrictions! maybe this is the sort of fanbase that’s specifically insistent on the soundtrack reflecting the one in the game as closely as it can – short of a line-out recording – or maybe they asked namiki for a mix that would sound alright running through the cv1000 and he built it to spec too. this is far from his first stg soundtrack, after all…
it’s such a sad game… like the whole donpachi series is meant to be sad, and daioujou will always be the most thematically sad, but there’s an aura of defeatedness around this one that is hard to ignore. cave tried so hard, for far too long, compromising themselves over and over again, in pursuit of some vision that was already deluded when they started and became laughable by the end. no, the kids still aren’t going to play your space shooters, dad. not even if you put lolis in them.
