is a video game a video game? should a video game be a video game?
when you write music that’s supposed to be music for a video game, should it be music for a video game?
athena’s name is magic, after all.1
i wish i could argue that video game music was never meant to be video game music, and the only reason it sounds like video game music is because of technical limitations and conventions which crystallized from these technical limitations. but i know that it’s more complicated than that. but does this album?
this album is… remarkably tuneless. where are the melodies that make you want to rip your heart out? where is the classical influence? where is the sublimated YMO?
i think selene museum moon forest is still the peak of not-vgm-but-should-be music. that one gets it in a way that nothing else i’ve listened to has – including a good amount of western actually-vgm. and i think it does so by not even trying to be vgm at all!
★ nourishment. i think that, if it didn’t try to include vgm affectations, then maybe i would like this more. i wouldn’t love it, but it just wouldn’t rub me the wrong way.

Context: Psycho Soldier is a 1987 arcade game by SNK whose main theme is a full pop song with digitized vocals, played through the hardware’s own sound chips. Its lyrics are about the protagonist, Athena. It may have been the first game to do something like this without resorting to e.g. embedding a cassette player in the machine, as in the 1983 game Journey. ↩
