★ 大地の歌: i have a growing distrust of world music vocals because it’s hard to know if the artist knows what they mean, or whether they have an important cultural context beyond how they were stripped for stems. i can’t help but think about the muslim prayer chants that got surreptitiously recorded for a sample pack and ended up in majora’s mask. i can’t help but think about the entreaty to be heard by one’s ancestors within Ah hoye, oh vakuru woye getting translated by one scholar as “Vocables.” i feel as if these artists are tampering with important and precious meanings, though i also have no way of actually knowing whether or not they are.
the song is pretty good though.
