this is the one that starts with mtv makes me want to smoke crack. because that song is fantastic.
★ and then yeah mexico is great too. cut 1/2 blues. they’re both good. the energy on this is good, the deadness on the stereopathetic one is good. pay no mind this is almost a classic beck singles collection
★ fume, desire (aka hollow log)
★ too many blues
★★ when the water will take back the land
surprisingly intimate. and it’s kinda weird to think that, if i ever did beck by album, this, stereopathetic, and mellow gold would all be riding moon disaster tier and one foot in the grave, western harvest field, and golden feelings wouldn’t be that far behind. i’m not sure what makes pre-odelay beck so magical. it’s simple, direct music of a heartland variety perhaps.
THE OTHER ONE: 2015-06-09
like, only beck. only beck could release an album where, for some people, 90% of the tracks would be completely different and unique.
★ this version of fume is good too.
★ that highway won’t get you to heaven is kinda awful! aww.
why can’t i believe in you is really nice too.
★ don’t shit me mama. why didn’t the so-called slacker generation go for this instead.
★ don’t get bent out of shape, a man named will
strangely i like the other version but then i think beck did too, considering a lot of those songs ended up on other releases.

Saturday Apr 01, 2017, 02:22 PM ESTi’m convinced that the most profound and real thing beck ever wrote is MTV Makes Me Wanna Smoke Crack
and i say that as a fan of the guy, albeit one heavily biased toward his pre-odelay works, back when he was barely a part of the music industry and floated between minimum-wage jobs trying to stay alive. back when he ate beans from a can as the tv antenna struggled to pick up mtv, its snowy stills taunting him with glimpses of a life more glamorous than any he’d ever have.
but then he made it big and ran out of stuff to say.
