(first watch was years ago)

what struck me this time was how this is absolutely candy for the imagination. i think it stems fundamentally from the same motive that alice in wonderland comes from, where the point is to present a world that delights viewers in its construction. even in such a small runtime, it feels deep. it feels like there are places that we had left unexplored, and alternate routes to the castle which weren’t chosen this time. i think more works should be like this.

jareth is an abuser, and only now does it strike me that almost everything he says is a stereotypical abuser line, verbatim. i heard one of the roommates say that the film is a metaphor for dealing with an abusive partner and i honestly do think the labyrinth is an effective metaphor for that: a world where left can be right and right can be left according to a logic that you have no say in, a world where you’re always on your back foot trying to make sense of it when the rules are constantly changing.
of course, then they had to make the abuser character played by someone who is hot, but maybe that’s accurate too. sometimes you fall into it because you’re charmed, and is it really so easy to say no to someone so charming?

also this time i paid attention to the bulge, because once you see it you can’t unsee it.
