eu - th is really nice for dvorak navigation
or, e and u for down and up, t and h for left and right.1
context: the dvorak layout splits hjkl navigation so that j and k (move down and up) are controlled by the left hand – with the two next to each other – while h and j (move left and right) are controlled by the right hand albeit in a more spread-out form. having vertical and horizontal navigation split between hands makes a lot of ergonomic sense to me; having the keys moved to the home row and placed beneath the index and middle fingers makes even more sense.
i’m honestly tempted to redo my evil bindings to make this happen
(oops i did and now let’s see how i feel in time…)
2025 edit
this has now become indispensable to me. i’ve shimmed together an equivalent to use it in vim, and i use that vimrc in obsidian now too. it’s still a tiny bit buggy,2 and i still can’t think of a reliable keychord escape (i use a-
and it only screws me over sometimes), but the benefits outweigh the drawbacks a hundred times over, at least to me~ 💘🪽
more complex commands are rendered opaque
one of the things i adore about spacemacs – and by extension doom – is that menu commands are sorted into the leader key under relatively easy mnemonics. this makes it pretty easy to perform complex actions, guess where actions whose commands you don’t remember might be, and learn new things you can do just by looking through the menus.
whereas emacs… for as many accusations as you could make against vim overloading the base keys, emacs is just as bad with the control and meta keys. everything is stuffed into either C-x or C-c, and it’s up to you to guess which one it’s stuffed into, and then which command will get you what you want. you can cheat a bit with M-x, but it starts to get a bit demoralizing when you see commands that are buried four entries deep past the C-x.
meow solves vim’s problem really well, but it chooses to solve the evil integration problem by getting out of the way and letting emacs’ fucky organization shine through unimpeded. the keypad should ostensibly help a bit, but the most it really does by default is let you not hold down ctrl. there’s probably a way to insert your own commands into the keypad and recreate the spacemacs/doom leader, but that would take so long…
